Adoring God: A 3-Step Valentine’s Prayer Guide

If I’m honest, I’m not a die hard Valentine’s Day fan. I’m not a Valentine’s Day hater either–it’s just a day that’s kinda there. As foodies, Casey and I celebrate by enjoying a nice dinner out, and then we carry on with our lives! But if there’s one thing I am a sucker for, it’s leaning into the seasons. I believe we’re created to embrace the present season because God made each one with intention. Winter, as much as I dislike it, is a time we’re meant to rest and slow down. Summer is for vitamin D and late nights outdoors, soaking in the warmth and the bug bites.

And since Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, I wonder if this weekend gives us an opportunity to love the Lord our God! He is worthy of our adoration and wildest praise, as David shows us in  1 Chronicles 29:10-13. In these verses, David adores God for providing the necessary materials to build the temple in Jerusalem. Notice how David focuses on specific characteristics of God, and specific acts of faithfulness He’s accomplished, in this scripture:

“Then David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly. David said, ‘May you be blessed, Lord God of our father Israel, from eternity to eternity. 11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all. 12 Riches and honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. 13 Now therefore, our God, we give you thanks and praise your glorious name.’”

Maybe you relate to David today, and recently witnessed God’s power and might in your life in a big way. Or, maybe you want to thank God for how intentionally you’ve felt His presence lately. Are you in awe that He healed your friend? Are you grateful He’s comforting you while everything seems to be falling apart?

Each of us knows exactly why we adore God in this season, and today, we can bring that to Him in prayer. May this Valentine’s Day serve as your opportunity to worship God through adoration, even as we feel the joy or the pain that this season is causing us. If you’re not sure where to start and have five minutes to spare, the adoration prayer guide below is for you!

Adoring God: A Three-Step Prayer Guide

  • Pause. Find a quiet corner of your home, office, or the coffee shop, and take a few deep breaths. If you need to, put any distracting thoughts or your to-do list in a mental box, close the lid, and set it down, knowing you can pick all those worries back up in a few minutes.

  • Reflect. Consider the last few weeks or months of your walk with God.

    • Name the struggles. How is God meeting you in your pain?

    • Celebrate the good. How did God demonstrate faithfulness? Have you seen your prayers, or the prayers of others, answered?

  • Adore. With your current season in mind, come to God with adoration and praise. Share with Him in prayer the specific moments and characteristics of His that you’ve cherished lately. Remind Him that you love Him, and thank Him for His presence in your life.
